Total loss of all driving licence categories and re-sitting all tests for driving while disqualified? 😱 The President has just signed the amendment introducing strict penalties for drivers!
The regulatory changes, prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure, will come into force at the beginning of 2026. Although some of them concern private cars, the transport sector will feel the impact most acutely. The new regulations aim to drastically tighten the consequences of breaking road law. 🚛
Here is a list of the most important changes that every professional driver must know:
✅ Draconian penalties for repeat offenders: If a driver is caught operating a vehicle during a 3-month suspension of their entitlement (e.g. for tampering with a tachograph or a serious speeding offence), they will lose their licence entirely. To recover it, they will be required to re-sit the tests for each previously held category separately. 🛑
✅ Licence suspension outside built-up areas: A 3-month document suspension for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h will also apply on single-carriageway two-way roads outside built-up areas.
✅ On-road testing: The practical part of category C and C+E tests will be able to take place outside the boundaries of towns, which is intended to make the assessment of future drivers' skills more realistic.
✅ Young drivers and the sector: 17-year-olds will be permitted to drive vehicles up to 3.5 t under the supervision of an experienced driver, but the regulations prohibit them from working in commercial transport (e.g. as couriers) until they reach the age of majority.
✅ Faster tractors: Agricultural tractors will now legally travel at 40 km/h (instead of 30 km/h).
The new regulations send a clear message: an end to leniency towards manipulation and recklessness. In particular, the requirement to re-sit all tests could mean the end of many professionals' careers.
